Don't Complicate Your Organizing Systems: 4 Easy Tips - Shop for organizing products last. Photo of Container Store shelves featuring Bisley colored metal document cabinets with pull-out drawers

It is just so darn tempting - I know. Walking into The Container Store, gazing at all those sexy organizing baskets and jewelry containers. Imagine how gorgeous your spaces would look if only you had that shiny orange desktop letter holder!

Don’t believe yourself. Don’t believe all the magazines showcasing the picture-perfect, neatly-labeled baskets that never overflow, like in real life. Don’t give in to media’s glorification of storage baskets.

We started February identifying four common organizing mistakes, and this is one of them! But read below for tips on how to make the best decisions when it comes to making purchases to store your stuff.

Tips for Purchasing Organizing Supplies

Don't Complicate Your Organizing Systems: 4 Easy Tips - If you can name it, you can tame it. Don't buy organizing products if you don't have a speciifc plan for them. Photo of Rubbermaid storage bin and drawer insert.

Tip #1 Like any good therapist will tell you, “If you can name it, you can tame it.” Use this philosophy for purchasing organizing products too - don’t buy stuff if you don’t have a plan for it. Make sure you know how the product will help you organize your space.

Don't Complicate Your Organizing Systems: 4 Easy Tips - Use what you already have, like jars and shoeboxes. Image of Tang jars inside a cabinet on top of lazy susan spinners

Bonus tip!

Use makeshift items like shoeboxes and jars before purchasing new items. Doing so allows you to perfect the space before investing in pricier items. Here’s a photo of my mother’s kitchen cabinet, using Tang jars from the 1970s as storage containers. Inexpensive and functional!

Tip #2 Shop for organizing products last. It may seem backward, but it is best to declutter and organize your items before you buy the containers. And make sure to measure your spaces along the way, so you can ensure that whatever you purchase will fit properly. A bin hanging part way off a shelf or a drawer organizer that is two sizes too small will just add frustration.

Don't Complicate Your Organizing Systems: 4 Easy Tips - Purchase organizing items that appeal to you-- pick one style and stick to it. Tip #3

Purchase items that appeal to you. When you open the doors to a closet, you want to feel at home, inspired and at peace. Those are strong motivators to help you stay organized. Do you like clear plastic bins, cardboard boxes, mesh baskets, metal bins, or wooden boxes? Make sure you visualize the look you want to achieve, then come up with a design style and stick to it.

Tip #4 Whether you go to an office supply, home improvement or organizing store, nothing beats shopping for organizing products in person. It is the best way to make sure you like what you are getting, and make sure they are sturdy enough. Products tend to look and feel differently in person than they do in an online catalog. So, go ahead, invest your time in the shopping trip. You’ll be glad you did.
